Protected by screens and covered with a large sheet of satin-finish plastic, the room glows with soft blue light that evokes the seabed. In a Japanese warmer, the Nuru seaweed gel is heated to the exact temperature of the human body. The therapist pours a ribbon of gel over her arm and spreads it across your chest: the initial coolness quickly becomes pleasantly warm as it meets your skin. The silky texture removes all friction, setting the stage for a fluid dance that mirrors the movement of water.
With broad, undulating movements, the therapist uses her torso, arms and thighs to glide over you, maintaining just the right pressure without ever becoming abrupt. Every part of the body becomes a massage tool: her hips trace circles over the lower back, her forearms travel along the sides and legs, and the wet sensation creates a feeling of weightlessness. Breathing in time with the rhythm feels natural: each breath grows deeper and the mind empties to the cadence of imaginary waves cast across the ceiling by the blue light.
Halfway through the experience, a short pause allows the gel to be refreshed and particular areas to receive more detailed attention. Gentle acupressure is applied to points of chronic tension before the whole-body movement resumes. In the final phase, the therapist synchronises her breathing with yours, gliding more slowly until she comes to rest with her heart against your back, conveying a shared pulse. For a few seconds everything is still except for the two heartbeats. She then moves away gently, removes the remaining gel with hot towels and perfumes the room with a light mist of rose water. You rise with hydrated skin, sharpened senses and the impression of having floated in an intimate ocean, emerging renewed and surprisingly light.
